Patient Information from Rudolf Weiner, MD

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Instructions and helpful information before and after surgery

Alcohol and tobacco:
Alcoholic beverages can cause gastric irritation and liver inflammation, increased acid levels and gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn) are common with alcohol consumption and may cause more nausea, gastric discomfort and decreased healing. Commonly seen in obese patients is a fatty liver which combined with alcohol can be toxic to the liver. During periods of rapid weight loss, the liver becomes especially vulnerable to toxins such as alcohol.
In addition, alcoholic beverages, which are fully absorbed before and after surgery are high in sugar. This can hinder weight loss after surgery and a plateau.

!! We recommend complete abstinence from alcohol for one year
after surgery and avoiding frequent consumption thereafter.

Smoking, as we all know, hinders proper lung function. Hence, increasing the possibility of anesthetic complications during the procedure. It also reduces circulation to the skin and impedes wound healing. Besides the well-known risks to the heart and lungs, smoking also stimulates stomach acid production, leading to possible ulcer formation.

!! Patients are required to stop smoking eight weeks before surgery.
Also, patients must agree to permanently refrain from smoking after surgery.

.. continue to decrease your healing time
