Patient Information from Rudolf Weiner, MD
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Instructions and helpful information before and after surgery

Office Pre-Surgery Visit (pre-operative appointment)

This occurs about the week before you get admitted to the hospital for the surgery. You can arrange the schedule to accommodate the hospital pre-admission procedures on the same day or the same week. This is especially important for those traveling from far away and should be at least 2 days prior to surgery.

On this visit, we will go over your complete medical history and pre-op physical examination. Please bring a list of all your medications that you are taking you will be given a prescription and instructions of what to take before and after the surgery. Make sure that the instructions are well understood. Bowel preparation prior to surgery is important and key to alleviating the chances of infections. Day before surgery is clear liquid only, with the bowel prep beginning at 4PM.

At your pre-admitting appointment, laboratory tests will be drawn, a chest x-ray will be taken and an EKG will be performed, if not available. You do not need to fast for those tests, unless specifically told to do so. You may bring a friend or family member if you wish. The upper endoscopy will be performed after sedative medication. Therefore the stomach had to be empty, two hours before investigation you must have the last drink.

Also, in this visit, we will be going over your checklist of all the documents required prior to surgery. Pulmonary clearance, Psych clearance, lab values and if needed, echocardiograms are reviewed at this time. To ensure smooth transition to the hospital, it is important that you make sure this checklist is completed. A nutritional class with instructions on deep breathing and coughing, leg exercises will be given. This allows you to get to the grocery store and stock up before coming home from the surgery.
