Patient Information from Rudolf Weiner, MD
Diet and Nutrition

Foods that must be avoided
These foods have a concentrated supply of calories with little nutritional value. These empty-calorie foods should be left out of your healthy diet.

Avoid Sugar and foodstuffs containing large quantities of sugar, such as:
  • high-calorie soft drinks
  • syrups
  • cakes
  • biscuits
  • sweets
  • jam
  • marmalade
  • honey
Avoid High-fat foods including:
  • chocolate
  • chips
  • pies
  • pastries
Alcoholic drinks should also be avoided as much as possible. These are drinks such as:
  • beer
  • cocktails
  • wine
  • champagne
  • liquors
  • port
  • sherry
  • and other high-calorie drinks

Dumping-Early: This is rapid emptying of feed into the jejunum. It is a high concentration of simple sugars that causes an immediate influx of fluid into the intestine. This then results in a quick onset of cramping and diarrhea and low blood pressure. Avoid sweets or even foods containing sugar alcohols (sorbitol).

Dumping-Late: These symptoms include lightheadedness, flushing, tachycardia and trembling. This can also be known as “hypoglycemia” and there is an increase of insulin secretion.

Lactose Intolerance: there can be a decreased production of Lactase. Symptoms include gas, bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. This is usually a temporary condition (6 months) for those that were not intolerant to lactose before surgery. Start with Lactose reduced milk, yogurt and hard cheeses.
